Abstract

A cornerstone of Scrum is ordering your Product Backlog to maximize business value. But what does that really mean? To be sucessful, your Product Owner must have an intimate understanding of each backlog item and the ability to articulate why a particular item is prioritized over another. Unfortunately, this may be the least understood job in Scrum.

There are a number of different approaches to this problem, but in this session Alex Brown will show you how Scrum Inc. addresses it. This session will detail how we as a scrum-run organization calculate business value and use it to inform our fiscal and strategic goals and link the work we are doing directly to bottom line profits. Our quick but quantitative method will give you the practical knowledge you need to maximize the business value of your backlog.

Alex will discuss how to calculate Net Present Value per story point, account for the value of “intangibles”, and manage technical debt as part of the backlog. We will also present example calculations from other industries and examine the nuances that affect your backlog.

 

 

Bio

Alex Brown is the Chief Operating Officer of Scrum Inc. He has deep experience in Agile/Lean management methods, organizational transformation and business strategy. Alex has expertise in helping executive leadership and working teams collaborate effectively through common goals and metrics.  He is actively involved in adapting the Scrum methodology beyond its traditional home in software development into other creative team environments, and has a particular interest in pushing the envelope in financial and progress reporting in a Scrum context in order to firmly connect a company’s Scrum with its corporate strategy.

Prior to joining Scrum Inc., Alex was a Principal at The Boston Consulting Group, where he led more than twenty projects to improve competitive positioning and transform fortune 100 companies to leaner and more agile operations.  His project experience includes cases in the retail/consumer, IT, manufacturing, healthcare, finance, and government sectors. 

Alex holds an MBA from the Wharton School of the University, where he was a Palmer Scholar. He also earned a Masters and a B.S. in Engineering From Cornell University.
