Presentation: "Scaling Pinterest"

Track: Everything Connected - Day 2 / Time: Friday 10:20 - 11:10 / Location: Amalienborg

It's been an amazing ride building Pinterest from the early beginnings to today. We've watched it grow from a handful of engineers to 150+ and from hundreds of users to hundreds of millions, in just a few years.

We'd like to take you on a tour of our evolution, with specific focus on the early days. We'll discuss how the team and technology evolved, the challenges we faced, the (many!) mistakes we made, and the successes. We go into depth about how we made technology decisions and what we would have done differently, and try to leave you with tons of info you can use immediately to improve your infrastructure.

Additionally, if you're interested in particulars of how we sharded our databases, we're happy to discuss afterward over beer!

Marty Weiner, Cloud Ninja @ Pinterest

Marty Weiner

Biography: Marty Weiner

Marty joined Pinterest in the dark ages before the databases were with form and void. Before the days of caching. The days when we strove every day to increase uptime from four 8's to five 8's.

The first 1.5 years of Pinterest life was spent purely scaling the site. After that, Marty has spent much of his time fighting the forces of evil, focusing attention on stopping spam, porn, abuse, and security compromises.
