Driven by deep technical change as much as by the societal and cultural evolution that has been caused by widespread changes on the network, 2.0 topics like social networking and user-generated content often get the most attention these days. A set of changes has been occuring in the world of software development, providing exciting opportunities while offering significant challenges; New architectural approaches such as Web-Oriented Architecture and cloud computing have been combined with new high impact. Mashups and cloud computing are encouraging widespread 3rd party sourcing of application services across the network. The rise of the browser and Web applications as the primarily software delivery channel.

Web-Oriented Architecture (WOA) is based on the immense tensile strength of the World Wide Web itself and its underlying architectural fundamentals. And it's based on the basic concepts and rich outcomes that have made the Web far and away the largest open network on the planet as well as the largest SOA presently in existence. At the leading end of this is the Web mashups story with enterprise mashups being one of the major improvements to the IT landscape that WOA is heralding. I hope to explain WOA as simply as I can. This is still important because WOA just isn't standard fare yet for discussion in many IT circles while it's something that folks that build online services out on the globally scalable consumer Web increasingly take for granted.

We are in the process of creating a common virtual medicine card (CMC) for the public health care sector in Denmark. The purpose of the CMC is to maintain a common repository of the medicine cards of every citizen in Denmark. A medicine card contains the current medication of a citizen and with time all health care systems must interact with the CMC to view or update the medication. We are developing a rich web application for doctors using the application on an every day basis. This presentation is a case study describing how we have designed the system and the experiences we have gained.

The Web Platform often gets dinged for its lack of great tools. In the past, that would have been a fair demerit. And while, in the present, there are surely some gaps when compared to other environments, in reality, there are a bunch of interesting developer tools for the Web. In this session, we explore some of the most popular of these, including Firebug and another new tool from Mozilla.

A few years ago, Web developers discovered that browsers had hidden within them a few capabilities that when properly utilized could redefine the state of the web application art. Initially referred to as 'Ajax', these technologies have gone from being simple hacks into becoming the foundation for an exciting new client platform--the Web Platform. While Ajax was initially about wringing a bit more power out of stagnant browsers, times have changed: browsers are evolving at impressive speed, to say nothing of the Internet-speed evolution of the libraries built on top of them. In this session, we discuss the state of the Web Platform, including a look at the latest technologies and a peek over the horizon at what's to come.
