Presentation: "1,001 Iterations: Product Design, Illustrated"

Time: Monday 13:00 - 13:45

Location: To be announced

Abstract: How is a web app born? Over the past few months, the creators of Dabble DB have been building a new data visualization product - and enjoying the process immensely. This talk will lead you through the design and evolution of a unique new tool, from the initial idea through all of the mockups, experiments, epiphanies, implementations and re-implementations (in Smalltalk, Java, Ruby, Python, Javascript and ActionScript!), illustrated with screenshots and chat logs from months of collaborative remote development - not to mention an exclusive, detailed first look at one of the coolest pieces of information design you've seen in a while.

Presentation: "Speeding Ducks"

Time: Monday 14:00 - 14:45

Location: To be announced

Abstract: There's a common misconception that dynamic, "duck typed" object-oriented languages are inherently slow. History shows otherwise. Starting with the advances made by implementations of historically-important languages such as Smalltalk and Self, we will discuss how these techniques are being, should be, or could be applied to current dynamic favorites such as Ruby and Javascript.
