D3.js is a JavaScript library for manipulating the DOM based on data. In under three years, D3 has changed the face of dataviz, shaken up the world of web mapping and helped create many beautiful and exciting visualizations. In the "Making Sense of Data" track, this talk covers:

* how D3 addresses the fundamental problem of visualization
* the philosophy behind D3
* using D3's layouts and plugins to make hard problems easy
* D3's powerful geographic features
* practical considerations including browser support, efficiency and reusable code
* the best resources for all stages of D3 development

We'll dive deep into D3's source code, but we'll also take breaks to look at some of the loveliest and most interesting visualizations of the past few years. Whether you're a dataviz newbie or expert, there should be something for you here.

Anna Powell-Smith

Biography: Anna Powell-Smith

Anna Powell-Smith is a freelance full-stack web developer, with a love of data visualization. Her data work has been featured in the Guardian, Economist, Sun, Daily Mail, and on BBC television and radio.

She has been using D3 since 2011 and has spoken widely on unlocking the power of D3. Anna believes that D3 will change the practice of visualization and mapping. She was a technical reviewer on Scott Murray's well-reviewed book on D3, "Interactive Data Visualization for the Web".

Anna studied literature and computer science at Cambridge, then worked in the City of London before becoming a full-time coder. She now works with large companies, non-profits and startups to help them engage users, build beautiful tools and find stories in data.

When not working, Anna can be found blogging at darkgreener.com. She is a long-standing volunteer at mysociety.org, which runs sites that help people become more powerful in the civic and democratic parts of their lives.
